Gabi has been a member at CrossFit Leyland since February. Like many of the people who walk through our doors, she wanted to improve her health and fitness, but she had to overcome more than most to achieve this.
“In September 2014 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since then, I have undergone three operations, radiotherapy and chemotherapy”
Gabi’s desire to beat cancer is admirable. Just six weeks after finishing chemotherapy, she completed the Coniston Challenge in aid of Guide Dogs for the blind, which consisted of a 10 km hike, 12 km mountain bike ride and 1.6 km kayak!
“I have always been fit and active, enjoying horse riding and fell walking, but I lost a lot of fitness throughout my treatment. I suffered significant muscle wastage from consuming a drug that I must take for the next five years”.
Gabi wanted to offset the debilitating side effects of cancer treatment and was keen to find a method of training to help her achieve this.
“A friend mentioned CrossFit Leyland to me, so I came along and completed the free taster session, followed by the foundations course and I haven’t looked back.”
Over the past few months she has shown great spirit and determination to get better, turning up consistently at the gym with a smile on her face and taking on all challenges.
“I’ve amazed myself with what I’ve achieved in a short space of time. I feel fitter, stronger and have regained my confidence. ”
Cardiovascular function can deteriorate during cancer treatment, so Gabi wasn’t surprised when her regular ECG scans revealed a drop in heart function. She was, however, equally as amazed as her oncologist, when her last scan (3 weeks ago) revealed an improvement in heart function. Her determination to overcome the illness combined with a structured training programme, certainly appear to be paying off.
“Joining CrossFit Leyland is one of the best things I have done this year. The coaches and members are supportive, friendly and inspiring.”
It is incredible what you can achieve when you approach even the most daunting of obstacles with fearless determination. We look forward to seeing Gabi’s continued progress throughout 2016.
